A fatal multi-vehicle crash shut down all northbound lanes of U.S. 41 in Palmetto on Wednesday, Oct. 14, blocking a major commuter corridor for Apollo Beach and Ruskin drivers heading toward the Interstate 275 interchange.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) responded to the crash around 4:13 a.m., WFLA reported. The northbound ramp to I-275 was also closed, the agency said.

At least one person died.

Tampa Bay 28 reported the closures, citing FHP. The agency had not confirmed whether anyone else was injured, WFLA reported.

The closure affects drivers from Apollo Beach and Ruskin who use U.S. 41 northbound to reach I-275 toward St. Petersburg and points north. Commuters should seek alternate routes while the road remains closed.

FHP had not released details about how many vehicles were involved or what caused the collision. No timeline for reopening the northbound lanes had been announced as of Wednesday morning.

Witnesses or anyone with information about the crash can contact the Florida Highway Patrol.
