Hillsborough County deputies pulled two adults and a child from a boat taking on water near Fantasy Island on Sunday, Oct. 18.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit located the disabled vessel just before 6:30 p.m. as heavy chop caused it to take on water, the HCSO said on X. Conditions were too dangerous to tow the boat.

"With conditions making a tow unsafe, deputies secured the vessel and brought all three occupants aboard the SAFE boat," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

One adult and the child showed signs of "near hypothermia," but the sheriff's office said they warmed up inside the cabin of the rescue vessel, WFLA reported. All three were transported to the Davis Island Boat Ramp. No injuries were reported beyond the hypothermia symptoms.

Body camera video released by HCSO shows the boat taking on water and deputies pulling the child aboard the rescue vessel.

The SAFE boats used by the Marine Unit are about 38 feet long and capable of reaching about 60 miles per hour, according to WTSP. The vessels feature infrared heat imaging, sonar, radar and easy-access ramps near the bow so people can climb aboard quickly in emergencies. Each boat is also lined with ropes that several people can cling to during a mass rescue. The two vessels cost Hillsborough County taxpayers about $1.7 million total.

The Marine Unit has described itself as the only 24/7 marine unit in the Tampa Bay region, according to WTSP.

The sheriff's office urged boaters to check weather and water conditions before every trip. Residents can report boating emergencies by calling 911.
