The 11th Annual Waterset Turkey Trot returns to Apollo Beach on Thursday, Nov. 26, with a chip-timed 5K and Kids' Fun Run whose proceeds benefit four area schools.
Doby Elementary, Eisenhower Middle School, East Bay High School and Dorothy C. York Innovation Academy each stand to benefit from the Thanksgiving morning race, which starts along Waterset Blvd. near The Lakeside at 7250 Parkshore Dr. The 5K kicks off at approximately 8 a.m., followed by the Kids' Fun Run at 9 a.m., the Osprey Observer reported.
The event has grown since its 2016 debut, when roughly 600 runners raised more than $14,000 for three schools. Last year's 10th anniversary race drew more than 1,600 runners and raised over $46,000, according to Waterset's community blog. Each of the four schools received a check for $11,696.
Bradley Fuller of Doby Elementary said in April, when the school received its check, that the funds "will be used to expand programs and resources that enrich learning for all students," including academic enrichment, student wellness and classroom materials.
Dustin Robinson of Dorothy C. York Innovation Academy said at the same presentation that the school planned to use its share to help students with digital resources and invest in STEM education and magnet programs.
Registration and pricing
Early registration saves money. Through Oct. 31, the 5K costs $35 plus a signup fee on RunSignUp. That rises to $40 starting Nov. 1 and $45 starting Nov. 23. The Kids' Fun Run is $20 through Oct. 31 and $25 after that.
Online registration stays open through Nov. 26, but T-shirts and specific sizes are not guaranteed after Wednesday, Nov. 4. Every 5K finisher receives a race bib, Dri-FIT T-shirt and medal. Kids' Fun Run participants get the same in youth sizes.
Course and rules
The 5K follows a flat route along Waterset Blvd. The Kids' Fun Run offers three distances: one mile, half-mile and a mini route for children under 5.
Strollers are welcome but must start at the back of the line. Pets are not allowed at the 2026 race, a new rule due to the event's growing size. A virtual 5K option is also available, though race packets may not arrive before Thanksgiving morning.
East Bay High School posted on X after last year's race, calling the event a tradition the school is "grateful" Waterset continues.
@EastBayHS: "Loved seeing our students, staff, parents and community members at Waterset's Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning! Grateful that Waterset continues to help East Bay with its proceeds each year!"
The next price increase takes effect Nov. 1.
