Apollo Beach Skate Park hosts the Best Shredder skateboarding contest Saturday, Sept. 19, as Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation rolls out its fall programming.

The contest is part of a series that has visited several county skate parks this year, including Carrollwood Village in March and Jackson Springs in April, according to the county's September parks newsletter. Apollo Beach is the next stop.

No start time, age categories or registration details have been posted for the Sept. 19 event. Residents can call the skate park at (813) 645-5314 or check the county's fall programming brochure for updates.

Ruskin SOAR trip heads to Wall Springs Park

A county seniors program also launches from Ruskin in September. The Seniors Outdoor Active Recreation program, known as SOAR, meets Wednesday, Sept. 9, at Ruskin Park & Recreation Center for a trip to Wall Springs Park in Pinellas County.

SOAR offers guided hikes, birdwatching and dolphin sightseeing cruises for active older adults, according to the county's program page. Departure time and registration details for the Sept. 9 outing were not listed in the newsletter.

After-school programs open at both centers

Both Apollo Beach Park & Recreation Center and Ruskin Park & Recreation Center offer after-school programs for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The programs run Monday through Friday from school dismissal until 6 p.m. Cost is $80 every two weeks.

Summer camps saw 10% jump in enrollment

The fall lineup follows a summer camp season that served 3,345 children across Hillsborough County, a 10% increase from 2025, the county's September newsletter said. In a post-camp survey, 95.4% of families said they were satisfied or very satisfied.

What's ahead

The 45th Annual Tampa Bay Active Life Games, an Olympic-style competition for athletes 50 and older, opens Monday, Sept. 28, at Barksdale Senior Center and runs through Friday, Oct. 9. Registration closes Monday, Sept. 7.
