Every bingo card sold on Monday, Aug. 10, at Sunset Bar & Grill at Little Harbor will help feed, shelter and find homes for dogs and cats at Ruskin's only no-kill animal rescue.

Critter Adoption and Rescue Effort, the all-volunteer shelter at 1528 27th St. SE, is partnering with the waterfront restaurant for a fundraiser that includes bingo, raffle prizes and a 50/50 drawing. The event begins at 7 p.m., with organizers encouraging attendees to arrive early to claim a table, buy cards, and order food and drinks.

C.A.R.E. receives no government funding. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit relies entirely on donations, adoption fees, fundraisers and grants to operate, according to its July/August 2026 newsletter.

All proceeds from the Aug. 10 event go directly to the shelter.

The fundraiser continues a pattern of C.A.R.E. partnering with local businesses. The shelter held bingo nights at Salty Shamrock in Apollo Beach in March and June, both drawing large crowds. In July, Local Brew Company on Express Valley Drive hosted a community gathering night where a portion of sales went to C.A.R.E.

President Joann With leads the shelter's board of directors, which also includes Vice President John Fischer, Treasurer Marlene Greenberg and Secretary Joyce Maggio. Outreach Coordinator Cheri Schumacher serves as the primary contact for business partnerships and community outreach events through C.A.R.E.'s Community Outreach Committee.

Founded in 2000, C.A.R.E. celebrated its 25th anniversary this year and broke ground on a new facility in June. The shelter is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., for adoptions.

Sunset Bar & Grill said in its event listing, posted in late June, that the bingo night helps provide food, medical treatment and adoption resources for animals across the SouthShore community. Aug. 10 also happens to be National Spoil Your Dog Day.
