Outdoor gear, firearms and ammunition are tax-free in Florida through Dec. 31. The statewide sales tax holiday covers items sold at shops along U.S. 41 in Apollo Beach and Ruskin.

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the second annual Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday at a Monday press conference in Lakeland, according to Tampa Bay 28. The holiday started Sept. 1 and suspends Florida's 6% sales tax on qualifying purchases of firearms, ammunition, hunting equipment, fishing gear and camping supplies.

"We are proud to protect Floridians' Second Amendment rights while helping hunters, anglers, and sportsmen keep more of their hard-earned money," DeSantis said at the Lakeland event, according to Lake Okeechobee News.

The governor's office estimates the 2026 program will deliver roughly $40 million in statewide tax relief. Combined with an estimated $45 million from the inaugural 2025 holiday, the two-year total reaches about $85 million.

List of tax-exempt items expands this year

Eligible items include pistols, rifles, shotguns, bows, crossbows, fishing rods, reels, bait, tackle, tents, sleeping bags, camping stoves and lanterns. This year's program expanded the list of firearm accessories to include magazines, range bags, barrels, triggers, slings, bipods and suppressors.

For fishing bait and tackle, individual items priced at $10 or less and multi-item packages at $20 or less qualify. Those thresholds are double what the 2025 holiday allowed, FOX 13 reported.

Several shops along U.S. 41 carry qualifying gear. 5 Boys Bait and Tackle, at 467 N. U.S. 41 in Ruskin, sells live and frozen bait, rods, reels and tackle.

Bait and Tackle of Apollo Beach sits at 6040 N. U.S. 41. West Marine, at 6492 N. U.S. 41 in Apollo Beach, stocks fishing gear and boating supplies.
