Two boaters were rescued from local waters on Tuesday, July 21, after their small aluminum vessel ran aground and sank in the Apollo Beach and Ruskin area, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office reported.
HCSO's Marine Unit received the call at 3:31 p.m. By the time deputies reached the scene, the boat was fully submerged with both adult occupants still in the water, according to the agency's account posted Thursday, July 23.
Both people were transferred to HCSO's Safe Boat and brought to Williams Park Boat Ramp on U.S. Highway 41 in Ruskin.
The sheriff's office did not identify the two boaters, disclose their conditions beyond "safely transferred," or state what caused the vessel to run aground. The specific waterway where the sinking occurred was not named.
A busy launch point
Williams Park Boat Ramp sits near Tampa Bay and the Little Manatee River and is one of the most heavily used launch points in Hillsborough County. A 2018 county report cited between 15,000 and 20,000 launches per year at the site, though current figures may differ.
The rescue came less than three weeks after HCSO ran a joint enforcement operation over the Fourth of July weekend that included 74 vessel stops on Hillsborough County waterways. Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a July 6 press release that "the impaired operation of any vehicle or vessel, on land or water, will not be tolerated in Hillsborough County."
HCSO has not indicated whether impairment, mechanical failure, or navigation error played a role in the July 21 sinking.
Summer boating safety
The incident falls during peak summer boating season in Florida. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission issued boating safety warnings ahead of the Fourth of July weekend, noting that simple safety precautions can save lives.
HCSO posted video of the rescue response on its social media accounts. The post had drawn more than 4,300 views as of its first two days online.
