Boaters heading out from Apollo Beach and Ruskin face dangerous conditions on the water through the rest of the week, the National Weather Service warned.

Advisory covers waters from Tampa Bay to the Gulf

The National Weather Service in Tampa Bay posted an advisory Tuesday, saying increasing winds over the northeastern Gulf waters will create hazardous boating conditions beginning late Tuesday night and expanding southeast through the region.

The weather service urged inexperienced mariners and operators of smaller vessels to stay off the water.

The weather service's coverage area includes Tampa Bay and adjacent Gulf coastal waters, placing Apollo Beach, Ruskin and surrounding waterways in the affected zone. The advisory did not specify wind speeds or wave heights.

Florida law requires a life jacket for every rider

No expiration date was given beyond "the rest of the week." Florida law requires every vessel to carry a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device for each person aboard, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The state urges everyone on a boat to wear a life jacket, not just have one stowed.
