Hillsborough County closed the picnic shelter at the Ruskin Commongood Boat Ramp on Thursday, Sept. 3, to tear it down and build a replacement.

The work is expected to last about one month, the county said in a post on X. The shelter will be unavailable throughout the project.

The free ramp at 107 1st Ave NW in Ruskin provides access to Ruskin Inlet and the Little Manatee River. It is open sunrise to sunset year-round, with about 20 parking spaces.

The county did not say why the shelter needed replacing or how much the project will cost. Residents with questions can call (813) 987-6240.

Ruskin's Ice Age dig unearthed 20,000 fossils near Cockroach Bay

In July 1983, self-taught paleontologist Frank Garcia found fossil bones exposed by a dragline at the Leisey Shell Pit near Cockroach Bay in Ruskin, leading to a 1984 excavation that recovered more than 20,000 Ice Age specimens representing 203 species, with the legacy preserved at a historical marker on Mammoth Trail and the free Paleo Preserve Fossil Museum at Camp Bayou.
